Often times, air conditioning or heater problems can be solved without calling a technician. Below are some simple yet effective measures that should be taken before requesting service.
If your air conditioner is not working:
- Check that the power switch to the unit is on.
- Check the breakers.
- Check filters, and replace them as needed.
- Check the thermostat make sure it is set to the cool position and that the batteries are ok if it is a digital thermostat.
- Is the thermostat above or below room temperature? If it is above, the system is heating. If it is below, the system is cooling.
- Check to confirm that there is no water in the drain pan (located in the attic unit).
- If the fan is not turning off, check to see if it is in the auto position.
If your heater is not working:
- Check that the power switch is on.

- If the unit is oil, check the oil level in the tank. If propane, check the propane level.
- If the fan is not turning off, check the thermostat to make sure it is in the auto position.
- If you have a steam boiler, make sure that water is in the boiler.
- If you have a furnace, check to make sure the filter is clean-change as needed.
It is also important to make sure that nothing is blocking air vents and that they are open. This will allow for maximum circulation of air flow throughout the house. For your family's safety, it is also a good idea to keep a carbon monoxide detector in your house to check for any possible leaks.
